Cannabis as Part of a Healthy Lifestyle: The Exercise Boost

Medical Information

Cannabis users are just as likely as anyone to eat healthy food and to pursue some form of exercise, they just use cannabis for pain instead of over-the-counter or prescription pain relievers.  Getting out for some movement is a great way to get or stay healthier, and the positive body effects you get from exercise can enhance the effects of your medicine!

According to a recent study published within the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, researchers at the University of Sydney discovered that engaging in exercise can provide you with a stronger buzz and increase the potency of cannabis. Rather than needing to use specific types of medicine, the fact is that working out for just a half hour will trigger an additional stronger high for marijuana users. Within the study, 15 cannabis smokers were asked to complete 35 minutes of exercise on a stationary bike while the researchers measured the level of THC in their blood. The study found that levels of marijuana’s active ingredient were 15% higher on average after the participants had engaged in exercise.”

So not only is exercise good for you on its own, it can boost the effectiveness of your medicine! For those of you who have a hard time exercising because of pain, cannabis helps relax your muscles for gentle stretching or yoga, and light weight training with resistance bands, swimming, or water-walking are great no-impact/very low-impact workouts. Be sure to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
